Hansen will advise Prime Minister Mark Carney and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly. Joly said he offered to help build a new space strategy when he left the Canadian Space Agency.
In April, on the Artemis II mission, Hansen and three other astronauts travelled around the moon and farther into space than any humans before them.
“
"I'm just super excited to serve Canada in that role," Hansen said in a video posted on social media.

Why it matters
The appointment comes as Canada widens space co-operation with Europe; US Ambassador Pete Hoekstra said Canada has decided to move away from SpaceX.
