Ottawa puts $254 million into upgrading the Port of Saint John

Total cost of the project

463 million $

The Saint John Trade Corridor project in New Brunswick costs $463 million: $254 million from Ottawa, $116.5 million from the province and $92.5 million from partners.

What gets built

  • Dredging of the port's main channel
  • A new CBSA container examination facility
  • More than 100 km of replaced rail
  • A rebuilt Simms Corner intersection

The work includes dredging the main channel for two-way traffic at high tide, a new Canada Border Services Agency container examination facility and more than 100 km of replaced rail.

"We have what the world wants and we are going to deliver it to them based on these investments in the port," Premier Susan Holt said.

And us?

It is the first project paid for by Ottawa's $5-billion Trade Diversification Corridor Fund, meant to help Canadian goods reach markets beyond the United States. The port should handle 825,000 to one million containers a year.
