Highland Valley Copper, near Logan Lake, B.C.

United Steelworkers Local 7619 served the notice to Teck's Highland Valley Copper mine near Logan Lake, British Columbia, after talks ended Tuesday evening without a deal. A strike can begin at 8 a.m. PT this Saturday.

Members who voted for a strike

100 %

All 944 members who took part in the strike vote backed it, the union says. The local represents about 1,200 workers at the mine.

The union wants better wages and pensions to keep skilled trades workers, and says it will not accept concessions. It says the company presented a revised offer Tuesday but other concession demands remain.

What's next

The union says it remains available to bargain during the notice period, and workers will keep reporting for their shifts until further notice.
