At a Tuesday campaign event in Florida for David Jolly, the Democratic nominee for governor, the former U.S. president called Prime Minister Mark Carney a longtime friend and “about the most well-qualified leader in the world.”
“I’m tired of treating our allies like they’re dirt. And we have the gall to suggest that they should become the 51st state?”
— Bill Clinton, former U.S. president
Background
President Donald Trump has mused about making Canada a U.S. state for more than a year, and repeated it last week at a rally in Bullhead City, Arizona. The two countries remain in a trade war that has brought tariffs and layoffs.
Clinton gave no details on how the two met, saying only that they got to know each other having virtually nothing to do with politics.
