Ranovus wants to buy the federal government's Ottawa chip foundry

The Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre, set to be spun out of the National Research Council, is the only North American facility making these laser-and-fibre-optic chips for outside customers. Ranovus says it can keep the centre Canadian-owned.

"One of our first investments is going to be in that facility, and we're looking, actually, to purchase it."

Ranovus is also launching a venture arm to invest in its suppliers. It cites Toronto's Untether AI and Ottawa's Hyperlume, both now under California-based owners.
