Smith fends off a leadership review as the UCP adds a pro-Canada pledge

Associations backing Smith

65 of 87, at least

At least 65 of the UCP's 87 constituency associations passed motions backing the premier, the party president told members. At least 22 would have been needed to force a review.

Candidates for the party's 18-seat board must now sign a pledge to respect the Oct 19 referendum, in which roughly 75 per cent of Albertans rejected a future independence vote. Smith says anyone running for the party in next year's election must also affirm pro-Canada views.

"We're not an independence party," Smith told reporters Tuesday. "There's lots of range for people to be able to advocate on policy, but just not that."
