B.C.'s switch to permanent daylight time could scramble calendars and appointments

Check your appointments

Vancouver Coastal Health and Island Health tell patients to double-check their appointments, which may have shifted by one hour. Experts warn the change could also cause missed surgeries and late deliveries.

Microsoft and Google have updated their software for B.C.'s new time zone, but calendar events created before the updates may need to be changed by hand. Teams and Outlook events may not move on their own, and some Android phones and smartwatches may still fall back an hour.

Older systems at risk

  • Door access systems
  • Security cameras
  • Some point-of-sale systems

An IT firm's chief executive says many older systems cannot update their clocks automatically, so offices could see problems beyond calendars.

And us?

People who cross between Washington state and B.C. will see schedules shift too. A retired Microsoft executive says a four-hour train trip becomes three hours southbound and five hours northbound.
